Coping Saw Blades

Coping Saw Blades

Is there a difference in cuts of copying saw blades with higher TPI? You bet. But the best reasons to make the switch may not be for the reason you’re thinking.

I’m beginning a new project that involves using my coping saw. Whenever I use this tool I immediately think back to my days building houses and installing the trim, especially baseboards. Each corner was coped for a better fit. (You cannot get away with simply butting to 45° cuts.)

Back then we worked primarily in pine.

What Furniture Tells

Sun, 10/29/2017 - 6:04am
What Furniture Tells

Many woodworkers who focus attention on period reproductions “read” the images in books and pieces in museums to discover to what furniture tells them. Designs sometimes clue them in as to what period of furniture history the pieces were built. (It’s not always clear-cut because no furniture periods ended exactly on a Tuesday with a new period beginning on Wednesday.) It’s possible to learn in what area of the country pieces were built if they read the materials used in construction.

Goodbye to Finish Build-Up

Wed, 10/25/2017 - 5:45am
Goodbye to Finish Build-Up

When using my revolving finishing jig I apply finish as the turntable rotates. My projects move by finish spewing from my spray gun. That results in finish build-up.

It’s not noticed at the time, but finish build-up begins to layer on the turntable with each project. After 25 years of finishing an estimated 30 to 50 pieces per year (at least in my earlier days of woodworking), it’s necessary to replace the turntable.

Blue Tape Rules

Sun, 10/15/2017 - 5:07am
Blue Tape Rules

Many of you know or have discovered that I have a passion for blue painter’s tape. I think blue tape rules in the woodshop. Here’s a bit of history.

In the 1920s Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (known today as 3M) hired Richard Drew to travel around promoting the company products to automobile shops. The product he was pushing was sandpaper. Drew noticed that many of the shops struggled with different tapes. The sticky tapes of the day would not hold enough or would hold so much that paint was removed when the tape was peeled off the cars.

Veritas Surface Clamp Does More

Sun, 10/08/2017 - 5:06am
Veritas Surface Clamp Does More

In 2006 when I built my Shaker-style workbench, I installed holes along the front edge of my top to help with work-holding. I could hold one side of a wide panel in my vise and clamp the opposite edge using a Veritas Surface Clamp. Slip the clamp into a 3/4″-diameter hole, tighten the wedge adjustment feature, swing the tilt arm over the panel and thumb-screw the clamp tight.

Over more than a decade of using the bench, I’ve employed my pair of surface clamps many, many times.

Funky Woodworking Brace

Funky Woodworking Brace

As I was editing a video presentation about woodworking braces with Ron Herman (yes, woodworkingwithron.com Ron Herman) I was enamored with a funky woodworking brace that he shows and describes in one section of the video.

As you probably know, hand tools are not a huge part of my woodworking – certainly not old braces, but I do have a couple of examples. One is from my Dad, which he used in business and I played with as a boy.

Frankly, These Guys Are Kicking A@$

Frankly, These Guys Are Kicking A@$

This week, beginning on Monday, I have a couple of woodworkers in the shop building Pembroke tables. Frankly, these guys are kicking A@$. It’s been only three days and the Franks – that’s right, both guys in the class are named Frank – are owning these tables.

As you can see in the photo, the tables, complete with oval drop-leaf tops and fly rails with knuckle joints, are all but finished. Because they plan to breakdown the tables to transport them back to their shops, they decided to build without assembly, which is why the aprons are not yet installed.
